Children's Book Author
|
Writing and Developing Children's BooksMy sense of humor has always served me well, not only in life but also in writing for children, and certainly in the book development process. Troubleshooting and problem solving are merely mental challenges like any puzzle, and the "end product" makes the so-called trouble worthwhile. I can't help but have a lot of fun, especially when ideas pop into my head, as playful and plentiful as the polkadots on my shirt. I have written books for tots and middle-grade readers, and developed and edited hundreds more on various subjects, including Native American cultures, science and the environment, nature and animals, biography, and even a few celebrity profiles (under the pseudonym Frieda Pigeon). I've also adapted classic ficiton for the young adult audience. For the younger age groups, I've written storybooks in novelty formats: board books, plush books, interactive cloth with sound, and felt. Target markets include school and library, book clubs and book fairs, specialty and mass markets. My career began at Chelsea House Publishing, where I worked as an editorial assistant then asssistant editor, editing young adult nonfiction. I began working for another small publisher, Kidsbooks, Inc., in 1993, as a part-time inhouse freelance editor, advancing to the fulltime position of creative editorial director. In this capacity, I worked closely with the publisher to develop the booklist each year, targeted to children ages 6 months to 12 years. A fulltime freelancer since 2001, I write, edit, and develop commissioned projects for various clients. A consulting book developer for SoftPlay, Inc., since 2001, I conceptualize content for new as well as tried-and-true formats, including cloth books with interactive parts and sound. As the storywriter, I craft simple yet compelling narratives, often in rhyme, featuring original characters and licensed properties, such as Elmo, Dora, Clifford, FisherPrice's LittlePeople, and Winnie the Pooh. Collaboratiing with marketing directors, child development educators, designers, illustrators, and sound engineers, I'm involved in all aspects of concept development, from initiating ideas and titles to reviewing the finished product samples. Although I have a lot of fun when I work, I take my writing and responsibilities very seriously. After all, it's for the kids! |
